Forms in nature are not dictated by a single center. Like the grain of wood, crystalline structures, or genetic codes, they emerge through the accumulation of conditions and relationships over time. Rather than the final form, I focus on the invisible dynamics and structures that make it possible.

This inquiry extends to ceramic glaze. While glaze is traditionally understood as a decorative surface layer, I approach it as an independent, transformative material. Inside the kiln, it responds to heat, gravity, and time—flowing, gathering, and solidifying. These transformations are uncontrolled, yet never chaotic; they reveal how unseen conditions take form as visible structures.

I refer to the traces of this process as Gyeol. It is not a surface effect, but a record of time embedded within material transformation—a structure that reveals the process of formation itself.

Ultimately, I use glaze as a shifting medium to observe nature’s generative principles, where form emerges and transforms.

Biography


Hwajeong Yeo has recently obtined her MA in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art, supported by the 2023 Deputy Vice Chancellor’s International Scholarship. 

Through her ongoing research and teaching projects, she aims to foster a deeper understanding of the often-overlooked elements in life, encouraging dialogue about their significance in artistic expression.
